‘Latest update’:Mason Holgate Following their loss to Brighton, Sheffield United denounces the racist taunt of a defender…
Sheffield United strongly denounced the racist insults directed at defender Mason Holgate on social media platforms subsequent to their defeat against Brighton on Sunday. Holgate, who is currently on loan from Everton, disclosed some of the derogatory remarks he endured on his Instagram account. His dismissal during the first half for a high tackle on Kaoru Mitoma led to Sheffield United’s 5-0 loss.
Expressing his sentiments on the matter, the 27-year-old emphasized the necessity for both the sports community and society at large to take more decisive actions against racism. He acknowledged his regret for his actions during the match and extended personal apologies to his teammates, the club, and the fans. However, he highlighted the distressing nature of the continuous racist abuse inundating his social media feeds over the past 48 hours.
In response, Sheffield United announced their firm condemnation of the racial abuse aimed at Holgate, asserting their unequivocal support for him and commending his decision to shed light on the issue through social media. The club pledged to collaborate with relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation, reiterating their stance that racism has no place in football.
Holgate’s parent club, Everton, echoed similar sentiments, denouncing the vile nature of such abuse and offering their full backing to Mason. They lauded his bravery in speaking out against racism and urged everyone to adopt a zero-tolerance approach by promptly reporting such behavior to both social media platforms and the appropriate authorities.
Since joining Sheffield United on loan from Everton, Holgate has made three appearances for the club, following a shortened loan stint at Championship side Southampton last month.
