Birmingham City ‘set up’ a transfer approach for son of Middlesbrough Goalie

Birmingham City is reportedly eyeing a permanent transfer for Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper Aynsley Pears during the upcoming summer window.

Pears, 25, who previously worked under Blues manager Tony Mowbray and assistant Mark Venus at Blackburn, has made 16 appearances for Rovers in the Championship this season, conceding 26 goals and securing two clean sheets.

With Birmingham’s current goalkeepers, John Ruddy and Neil Etheridge, both set to become free agents in June and unlikely to extend their contracts, Pears has emerged as a primary target for the club. The Sun reports that Pears, son of Middlesbrough legend Stephen Pears, is high on Birmingham’s list of priorities.

Although Glasgow Rangers’ goalkeeper Jack Butland has been linked in recent months, the focus seems to have shifted to Pears. Additionally, Birmingham is keeping tabs on Brighton & Hove Albion youngster James Beadle, who is currently on loan at Sheffield Wednesday.

Pears, a native of Durham, has showcased his abilities in the Championship this season, making 53 saves. He is known for his proactive approach, often coming off his line, utilizing his strong reflexes, and preferring to punch the ball when necessary. However, his long passing skills are noted as a potential area for improvement.
