Only a few months after offering him a new contract, Celtic has chosen to let go of the “fantastic” player

HITC understands that Celtic has made the decision to cash in on Liel Abada just a few months after offering him a new deal.

In the summer of 2021, Liel Abada moved from Maccabi Petah Tikva to Celtic. The Hoops paid £3.5 million in transfer fees for the winger (Sky Sports).

The charm of Liel Abada at Celtic

Under former Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou, who is currently in charge of Tottenham Hotspur and is attempting to persuade Son Heung-min to sign a new deal, the 22-year-old—who can also play forward—performed admirably.

In 23 starts and nine substitute appearances in the Scottish Premiership for Celtic in 2021–2022—the young player scored 10 goals and contributed six assists.

During the previous league season, the Israel international appeared in 21 games as a replacement and made 13 starts for the Hoops. In those contests, the winger finished with five assists and ten goals.

While Brendan Rodgers called Postecoglou “a fantastic young player” on the team’s official website in September 2023 after Celtic decided to give him a new contract that would last until the summer of 2027, the 22-year-old has really struggled to make an impression under Rodgers. Postecoglou, who did not always start Abada, left for Tottenham in the summer of 2023.

This season, Abada has appeared in five starts and four substitute appearances for Celtic in the Scottish Premiership. In those games, he has provided one assist and one goal.

Now, Celtic has made the decision to let go of the winger. HITC has learned that Abada is joining Charlotte FC of Major League Soccer, where terms on a contract slightly short of £10 million have been agreed upon.

According to sources who spoke with HITC, Abada has to travel to North Carolina for a checkup in the next 48 hours.

With 68 points after 29 games, Celtic is now two points behind leaders and Old Firm rivals Rangers in the Scottish Premiership league. Defender Cameron Carter-Vickers of Celtic has been likened to Virgil van Dijk.
