UConn women’s basketball senior Aaliyah Edwards declares for the 2024 WNBA draft.
Star senior Aaliyah Edwards has declared that the ongoing 2023-24 season will mark her last with the UConn women’s basketball team, announcing her decision to enter this year’s WNBA draft in a social media post on Thursday. Edwards, a standout 6-foot-3 forward, has enjoyed her best season yet as a Husky, averaging career-highs of 17.8 points and 9.3 rebounds per game while shooting an impressive 59.4% from the field. She has garnered recognition as a second-team USBWA All-American and received an honorable mention from the Associated Press.
Expressing her gratitude for her time with the program, Edwards emphasized her commitment to achieving the ultimate goal of bringing a championship back to Storrs. Despite the bittersweet realization that this will be her final season with UConn, she remains focused on making the most of every moment and is determined to pursue championship glory alongside her teammates.
Edwards’ farewell tour begins with UConn’s first-round NCAA Tournament game against Jackson State, with the Huskies aiming to advance to the Sweet 16 for the 31st consecutive season. With Edwards now joining her fellow seniors in announcing their plans for next season, the stage is set for a memorable conclusion to her collegiate career.
Meanwhile, UConn’s roster will see the return of standout guard Paige Bueckers, who is enjoying a remarkable comeback season after redshirting due to injury, as well as Aubrey Griffin, who will embark on her sixth year with the team. However, the departure of point guard Nika Muhl, who has earned national recognition for her contributions, marks the end of an era for the Huskies’ senior class.
