West Brom man lauded as he puts 14-month injury nightmare behind him
Former West Brom’s favorite Matt Clarke has received high praise for his remarkable comeback from a 14-month injury ordeal, earning accolades from Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick. Clarke, a classy central defender, endured crippling back pain that kept him sidelined for over a year and left him feeling disenchanted with football.
However, Clarke made a triumphant return to action for Middlesbrough in November, showcasing his resilience and determination. Despite the long layoff, the 27-year-old has quickly regained his form, starting seven of Boro’s past eight games and contributing to their recent defensive solidity, which has seen three consecutive clean sheets.
Carrick commended Clarke’s remarkable recovery, highlighting his consistency in both training and matches since his return. The defender’s professionalism and dedication have been evident as he seamlessly reintegrates into the team.
Clarke’s journey is particularly noteworthy given his successful stint at Portsmouth, where he made 175 appearances and established himself as a fan favorite. During his time at Fratton Park, Clarke played a pivotal role in the club’s League Two title win in 2017 and Checkatrade Trophy triumph in 2019, earning recognition as The News/Sports Mail Player of the Season in successive years.
After leaving Portsmouth for Brighton in 2019, Clarke faced challenges, including loan spells at Derby County and West Bromwich Albion. However, his return to form at Middlesbrough demonstrates his resilience and quality as a player.
Middlesbrough, currently sitting 10th in the Championship table, are hopeful that Clarke’s contributions will help propel them towards a late push for the play-offs, with Carrick’s side enjoying a run of positive results in recent weeks.
