‘Rotation contributor ‘:One man the Celtics hope continue developing behind scenes…
When the Celtics made the move to acquire Jaden Springer from the 76ers in exchange for a second-round pick, it caused quite a stir, given the rarity of trades between rival teams. Springer had already demonstrated his defensive skills while contributing to the Sixers’ rotation prior to the trade, adding to the intrigue surrounding the deal.
Despite Springer’s potential, Sixers president Daryl Morey believed that the second-round pick would offer more immediate help to Philadelphia. This perspective led to the decision to send Springer to Boston, a move that didn’t sit well with some Sixers fans.
In response to any discontent among Sixers fans, Celtics co-owner Wyc Grousbeck playfully teased them during an appearance on NBC Sports Boston, highlighting their reaction on Philly message boards. Grousbeck noted the fans’ evident disappointment at seeing Springer depart.
While Springer hasn’t yet made a significant impact for the Celtics, this isn’t unexpected given the team’s depth. However, the front office’s decision to acquire the talented guard reflects their belief in his potential. At 6 feet 4 inches tall, Springer is entering his third season post-college, still only 21 years old, making him younger than some of the prospects in the 2024 draft who have spent years in college.
The Celtics are counting on Springer’s continued development, particularly in his defensive abilities, which could earn him significant playing time in Boston’s rotation. The fact that the trade caught Grousbeck’s attention adds another layer of significance to Springer’s stint with the Celtics, as he aims to prove himself following his move from Philly at the deadline.
