Sunderland, West Brom and Southampton ‘scout’ in-form winger once valued at £11million

Sunderland, along with several other Championship clubs, are reportedly interested in signing Oxford winger Josh Murphy, who has been in fine form this season.

The 29-year-old, twin brother of Newcastle’s Jacob Murphy, has impressed with six goals and four assists in League One, contributing to Oxford’s ascent to sixth place in the table. Murphy is set to become a free agent this summer after joining Oxford on a two-year deal following his release from Cardiff in 2022.

Previously valued at £11 million when Cardiff acquired him from Norwich in 2018, Murphy has also had a loan stint at Preston during his time with the Bluebirds.

Scouts from Southampton, West Brom, QPR, Hull, Sunderland, and MLS club Minnesota reportedly observed Murphy’s performance as Oxford secured a resounding 5-0 victory over Peterborough.

Oxford manager Des Buckingham praised Murphy’s performance, describing him as a “wonderful player” and expressing his delight at seeing him enjoy his football.

When asked about interest from other clubs, Buckingham acknowledged Murphy’s settled demeanor and suggested that his consistent performances could attract further attention.

Oxford currently sits in a favorable position for a playoff spot, sitting three points ahead of seventh-place Blackpool with a game in hand. They are in contention with Bolton, Peterborough, and Barnsley for a place in the playoffs in the third tier.
