Reading Review of the Season: August adaption period for League One

Reading had a challenging start to the season after a tumultuous summer, but signs of promise emerged amidst the difficulties. Despite a less than stellar pre-season and a narrow defeat to Peterborough United in the opening league fixture, Reading supporters found solace in a spirited performance.

The dawn of the new season also marked the beginning of supporter protests against owner Dai Yongge, underscoring the discontent among fans. However, a glimmer of hope emerged in the Carabao Cup, where a young Reading side stunned Millwall with a resounding 4-0 victory.

Normalcy returned briefly with a league trip to Port Vale, but a missed penalty and subsequent defeat signaled the end of Andy Carroll’s tenure at the club. However, Ruben Selles secured his first league win as manager against Cheltenham Town, setting the stage for successive victories over Stevenage.

A thrilling encounter against Exeter City saw Reading narrowly miss out on points, despite a strong second-half showing. Cup action against Ipswich Town provided some respite, with an entertaining draw taken to penalties, showcasing the team’s potential despite the eventual defeat.

Despite the challenges and setbacks, Reading demonstrated glimpses of their capabilities, offering hope for the rest of the season.
