Birmingham is now targeting a “superb” manager who claims to have learned from Rooney as their next objective

Birmingham City has apparently added a new face to their managerial shortlist in case Tony Mowbray is not appointed manager for the upcoming campaign, following their split with Gary Rowett following an unsatisfactory interim tenure.

In the end, Birmingham’s season ended in Championship relegation, which is disastrous given their situation earlier in the season. They were expected to contend for a post-season spot under John Eustace, but they soon regretted hiring Wayne Rooney despite their chances of making the playoffs.

After Rooney’s debacle, Mowbray took over as Sunderland’s manager. However, he had to make room for Rowett, meaning the Blues are now back at the starting point.

Birmingham, who is currently looking for a new manager, has already been connected to former manager Steve Bruce, who has more than enough experience to lead the team back to the Championship at the first opportunity. However, it appears that the club is currently targeting a younger applicant.

Following Liam Rosenior’s unexpected departure from Hull City, Wayne Veysey of Football Insider reports that Birmingham has shortlisted Rosenior for their management position. Although Rosenior received a nomination for the Championship’s Manager of the Season award, Hull finally decided to fire him, much to the surprise of many, because he was unable to guarantee a spot in the play-offs.

To prevent any Rooney analogies, though, the 39-year-old would need to start the game quickly at St Andrew’s, particularly after saying he had learned from the Manchester United icon while they shared the Derby County dugout.

Rosenior stated on Derby’s official website that Wayne is a people-person with intelligence. He has been able to demonstrate to him that he cares about them even in this trying moment.

“Whether he’s speaking to the staff about a difficult time when the club went into administration, holding a press conference, or leading a squad meeting, he stays the same. Wayne has shown me so much about handling pressure in situations like these, and I have learned so much from him.

Birmingham needs to move quickly to acquire “superb” Rosenior.

Hull’s surprising decision to split from Rosenior illustrates the quality of work he was putting in for the Tigers, who came dangerously close to finishing in the top six of the Championship. Despite being fired, Birmingham can now seize the opportunity to choose the kind of youthful manager they thought they would have when Rooney came.

Rosenior received a lot of recognition while he was at Hull, including from legendary Arsenal player and former midfielder Ray Parlour, who praised the former full back: “At Hull, Liam Rosenior is performing admirably.

“As a coach, I really believe he is underappreciated since he is getting the most performance out of the players. The players’ faith in him was evident last season, but this year they have showed greater consistency and talent, and they are now in the running for a play-off spot at the end of the campaign.”
