Carlos Corberán | The Importance of Arriving with the Correct Mentality and Confidence

The primary penalty taker for Albion this season, John Swift, has scored three goals from the spot.
If the scores are tied at the end of Friday night’s second leg at St Mary’s against Southampton, extra time and penalties will be used.

After a 2-2 draw overall, Albion’s previous play-off campaign ended in heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat at home against Villa at The Hawthorns. The visitors won 4-3 on penalties after Mason Holgate and Ahmed Hegazy were denied.

Tosin Adarabioyo and Kieran Gibbs both came in as the Baggies’ first four scorers that evening were defenders.

Since then, Albion has played in and lost two penalty shootouts in the FA Cup and EFL Cup against Brentford and Blackpool, capping a run of four straight losses from the spot in 2020–21. The most recent victory came against Peterborough during the FA Cup season of 2015–16.
