Edwards’ “fire still burning” despite looming relegation from Premier League
Edwards’ “Fire Still Burning” Despite Imminent Relegation from Premier League
Luton Town’s manager, Rob Edwards, remains optimistic as the team faces relegation from the Premier League. In his final press conference of the 2023-24 season, Edwards reflected on their performance and outlined his ambitions for a return to the top tier.
Reflecting on the Season and Final Match
Edwards expressed his determination to bring Luton back to the Premier League while discussing the squad’s status for the final match against Fulham at Kenilworth Road. He also touched on summer transfer rumors, particularly regarding Ross Barkley.
Injury Updates for Fulham Match
Edwards confirmed that key players would miss the final game. “Burkey and Ross will both be out, unfortunately. Burkey’s achilles is too sore, so we’ll take him out of it now. He’s been playing in pain. Ross will be out for a number of weeks.” He emphasized selecting a team best suited to win the match.
Positive Outlook Despite Relegation
Luton is poised to play Championship football next season unless a significant goal swing and a Nottingham Forest loss occur. Edwards maintained a positive outlook, noting the club’s strong position despite relegation.
“The club’s in a really healthy position. Since we arrived, we’ve said the club’s only going one way. Getting promoted allowed us to build on that. The Premier League has provided financial benefits that helped us improve the stadium, training ground, and squad. We’re looking forward, and I’m proud of the work done over the past 18 months. What we achieved was incredible.”
Pride in the Club’s Efforts
Edwards expressed pride in the team’s efforts, highlighting their strong representation of Luton. “We’ve given everything and shown Luton to the world in a positive light. That includes supporters, players, and staff. I’m really proud of this football club.”
Aspirations for Next Season
Edwards, inspired by newly promoted teams, is eager to compete at the top level again. “I’ve seen Ipswich and Leicester celebrating, and I want that to be us next year. That’s our goal. It’s difficult, but the fire’s still burning.”
Maintaining the Core Squad
A significant part of Luton’s potential success lies in retaining their core players. “We’ll try to keep as much of this group together as possible because we’ve been building something special. The team has evolved and grown, and we need to maintain that to attack the league and aim for promotion. Keeping the majority of the group together is our aim.”
Looking Forward
Edwards emphasized the club’s strong position, with many players still under contract. “We’re in control of a lot of things. We have to consider what’s best for the club and the human side of everything. We’re in a good position for next season.”
Ross Barkley’s Future
Ross Barkley, who played a crucial role this season, is linked with a move away. Edwards addressed Barkley’s situation, noting his ambition and the club’s influence on his career. “We’ve had a good chat. Ross is ambitious, and we all want to compete at the top. He recognizes what the club has done for him. We’re hopeful he’ll stay, but we’re realistic. There might be one or two others considering moves, but we’re in control. We’re committed to being as strong as possible next season.”
