Bills GM – Why i traded stefon diggs…The primary reason will shock you.

Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane openly discussed the difficult decision to trade Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans, a move that surprised many. Beane acknowledged that there were numerous factors involved, but the primary consideration was the impact on the team’s salary cap. He emphasized that they made the decision to take the hit on the salary cap sooner rather than later, opting to deal with the financial consequences now rather than carrying it over to future seasons.

The trade resulted in a significant $31 million dead-cap hit for the Bills, along with a loss of nearly $4 million in cap space for the upcoming season. However, it also freed up approximately $19 million in cap space for the following year, allowing the team to add more talent to compensate for Diggs’ departure.

Beane likened Diggs’ contract to an “albatross” hanging over the team’s cap situation, emphasizing the importance of addressing it promptly. By trading Diggs, the Bills aimed to diversify their receiving options, drafting Keon Coleman and bringing in veteran free agents like Chase Claypool, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and Curtis Samuel. Beane highlighted the depth and variety in their receiver room, likening it to the selection of flavors at Baskin-Robbins.

The Bills are particularly optimistic about Coleman’s potential impact on the offense, with quarterback Josh Allen praising his ability to provide a physical presence and win contested balls. Allen expressed confidence in the collective abilities of the team’s receivers, noting the positive contributions of players like Mack Hollins and Curtis Samuel. With the addition of Coleman to the mix, Allen believes the Bills will have a strong and cohesive group of pass-catchers moving forward.
