Celtic to receive a portion of €140m UEFA’s Club Benefits Programme this summer
Celtic will receive a portion of UEFA’s Club Benefits Programme this summer due to their players’ involvement in the EURO 2024 tournament.
Callum McGregor, James Forrest, Anthony Ralston, and Greg Taylor have been selected for Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad for the Germany trip.
UEFA has allocated €140 million for payouts to clubs with participating players, marking a 7.7% increase from 2020. This implies that during the tournament, Celtic will receive funds for each day their four Scottish players train and compete.
There are no astronomical sums here but, like when Bhoys stars feature at the World Cup, it’s a tidy little bonus for the club – especially in the context of the low prize money on offer in Scottish football.
Based on the 7.7% increase from 2020, each player participating in the tournament stands to earn approximately €9,400 for each day of involvement, spanning from ten days prior to their country’s first match until the day after they are eliminated or win the tournament.
For instance, if Scotland only reaches the group stage, each Celtic player would earn €188,000 over 20 days in Germany.
When multiplied by four players, this totals €752,000 for Celtic, equivalent to about £634,000 at the current exchange rate. If Scotland progresses beyond the group stage, the total earnings for Celtic will increase further.
Absolutely, Celtic fans have another reason to cheer on McGregor and the other players representing Scotland.
Besides the financial benefits for the club, it’s an opportunity for these players to showcase their abilities on a prestigious stage and gain valuable experience in high-pressure matches.
This experience will undoubtedly contribute to their growth and development, which is crucial as they prepare for the challenges of Champions League football next season.
