Free agent eyed by Luton Town, west Brom enters Sheffield Wednesday transfer list

Sheffield Wednesday has initiated formal discussions regarding the signing of Ian Poveda, who is reportedly set to depart Leeds United amid interest from West Brom and Luton Town.

Poveda, a former Manchester City prospect, was signed by Sheffield Wednesday in January on a loan from Championship rivals Leeds United. Poveda enjoyed tremendous success at Hillsborough.

Despite only contributing one assist in his ten appearances for the Owls, the Colombian international posed a serious danger in both attacking midfield and out wide. Danny Rohl soon saw Poveda as a key player in helping them avoid relegation to League One.

As such, there has been wide interest in the 24-year-old as he prepares to leave Leeds United. West Brom, Luton Town and Cardiff City were linked earlier this month while Wednesday have been keen on a reunion.

Now, The Star reports that their interest has been formalised.

According to reports, Poveda and Sheffield Wednesday are in “formal discussions” for a permanent return. The Colombian international is also being pursued by an undisclosed Ligue 1 team; nevertheless, “outline contract talks” have been held between the player and his previous loan club.

Poveda, who joined Leeds United from Manchester City, was long seen as an enticing possibility. His ability has long been apparent, but at Elland Road, things haven’t quite clicked for him due to form problems and injury concerns.

There were promising periods during his loans to Blackpool and Blackburn Rovers, and his time at Sheffield Wednesday has served as a reminder of his full potential.
