Coventry City young talent departs Sky Blues with mutual consent, ending his contract
News on Coventry City’s contracts and transfers from CoventryLive, including the departure of once-promising development player Evan Eghosa
Evan Eghosa, a development player for Coventry City who was captured in this photo during preseason action versus Forest Green last summer, has departed the team with mutual consent.
Despite having high aspirations of closing the gap to the first team, Coventry City has parted ways with another promising development player. According to CoventryLive, offensive midfielder/winger Evan Eghosa’s contract with the Sky Blues has been canceled with his mutual consent.
The Championship club offered the 18-year-old his first professional contract last summer. The two-year agreement is set to expire in July 2025. However, such arrangement has been terminated after a year.
Dermi Lusala and Bradley Stretton, two other players for the Under-21 team who City released in May, were listed when the team revealed its retained list, which included players who were being let go. Since then, Marco Rus, a 21-year-old prospect for the Scottish Championship who was predicted for a bright future, has gone to join Ayr United. The two parties agreed to an undisclosed price earlier this month.
When Eghosa was permitted to go on trial to Norwich City and played in part of the Canaries’ youth team’s 4-1 victory over Aston Villa, coming on as a second-half substitute, it was clear that his time at City was almost up.
It appears that the adolescent is searching for a new club right now.
What has happened to the young forward who seemed to be making good progress?
He became a regular for John Dempster’s Under-21 team after joining the team three seasons ago. He helped the young Sky Blues to two Cup finals. Over the summer, he trained with the first team under the careful supervision of Mark Robins and his coaches at The Alan Higgs Centre.
A month later, he was rewarded with a two-year contract after participating in the preseason and playing in three senior friendly matches against Forest Green, Shrewsbury Town, and MK Dons. Following his exploits, he expressed his gratitude, saying, “I am very happy.” It’s been fantastic, and I’m really appreciative. I must first and foremost give thanks to God, for my religion has played a major role in this as well. I’m happy to have made my first professional deal and to be here.
“Training with the first team has been a great experience,” he continued. I can now see the locations of the levels. That has motivated me to work harder. It’s been a pleasure working with Dennis Lawrence, Adi Viveash, and the Gaffer, the first team coaches. They’ve been observing me and interacting with me, which has greatly benefited my personal growth.
When asked then about his goals for the 2023–2024 season, he responded, “My current aim is to get more first-team exposure.” I participated in a lot of Under-21 games last season, but this time I want to be with the first team and challenge the manager’s perceptions. My goals are to advance and grow at this time.
Over the past year, something has obviously changed, and the two have made the decision to part ways.
