Ipswich town reportedly ‘lining’ up for west ham 24y/o defender with top tier experience…
Ipswich Town: West Ham’s Ben Johnson Linked to the Blues
Ipswich Town has been associated with a potential move for West Ham defender Ben Johnson. According to the Daily Telegraph, Ipswich Town is interested in signing Johnson during this summer transfer window.
Ben Johnson, who is 24 years old, is currently out of contract with West Ham United and could potentially join Ipswich Town as a free agent. The right-back has progressed through West Ham’s academy system and has accumulated over 100 appearances for the club. His experience includes playing in the Premier League, Europa League, and Conference League.
In addition to his primary role as a right-back, Johnson is also capable of playing as a left-back. He was a member of the West Ham squad that made history by winning the Conference League in 2023. Johnson has also been a former England U21 international and has scored two goals for West Ham. Last season, he made 24 appearances for the club.
Reports from The Athletic suggest that West Ham has offered Johnson a new five-year contract. Meanwhile, Championship side Leeds United is also reportedly interested in signing the young defender.
Ben Johnson has played over 100 games for West Ham.
Mark’s Verdict
As Ipswich Town prepares for the Premier League this summer, there appears to be a need for reinforcements at the full-back positions. Right-back is a particular area of concern. Axel Tuanzebe, who is naturally a centre-back, ended last season as the starting right-back, while the previous starter, Harry Clarke, has been dealing with Achilles issues and underwent surgery in May.
At left-back, Leif Davis is the clear starter, but there is a lack of a definite backup. Currently, youngster Cameron Humphreys is considered the second option on the depth chart.
Ben Johnson seems to fit the criteria set by Kieran McKenna and Mark Ashton. He is young, versatile, and has substantial top-tier experience. Additionally, Ipswich Town would not have to pay a transfer fee for him.
