£5m Aston Villa Deal May Give Luton Town Player Chance to Kick-Start Career
Ross Barkley’s outstanding performance at Luton Town has caught the attention of Aston Villa, leading to a potential £5 million move. This transfer could provide Allan Campbell with an opportunity to reinvigorate his career by filling the gap left in Luton’s squad and making a significant impact. Despite their relegation, Luton Town aims to bounce back, considering a squad reshuffle following Barkley’s departure.
Last season, Luton Town, under Rob Edwards’ management, played an exciting style of football with players like Andros Townsend and Ross Barkley, making them the neutral fans’ favourites in the Premier League. Barkley, in particular, excelled at Kenilworth Road, becoming the central figure in Luton’s midfield and contributing nine goals and assists. Despite narrowly missing out on survival, Barkley’s performance was a highlight.
Although Luton Town has returned to the Championship, they appear resigned to losing Barkley, who was acquired on a free transfer last summer. His performances have impressed Aston Villa, who are prepared to pay £5 million to re-sign their former loanee as they prepare for a demanding Champions League campaign next season.
Barkley’s departure presents an opportunity for Allan Campbell, who is seeking a second chance after a disappointing loan spell at Millwall. Campbell was crucial to Luton’s promotion to the Premier League but was deemed unsuitable for top-flight football. With Luton aiming to return to the Premier League, Campbell could be given a fresh opportunity to prove himself.
Barkley joined Luton at a low point in his career after a challenging period at Nice in France. Rather than relying solely on his reputation, the 30-year-old committed to Luton’s project and became a key player during their winter resurgence, helping the team to contend for Premier League survival. His impressive midfield performances were a significant reason why Luton troubled some of the bigger clubs in the top flight last season.
Ultimately, Luton was relegated after a 4-2 loss to Fulham on the final day, despite their brave efforts. Barkley, however, restored his reputation and is now set to play Champions League football next season, with Aston Villa close to finalizing a deal for him.
Barkley’s departure will leave a significant void in Luton’s squad, which Allan Campbell will be eager to fill. Campbell, a Scotland international, was a trusted member of Luton’s squad between 2021 and 2023 and was instrumental in their promotion battle. Although he was essentially replaced by Barkley once promotion was secured, Campbell now has another chance to impress.
Despite limited playing time during his loan at Millwall last season, Campbell has demonstrated his quality in the Championship and his versatility could be valuable for Luton. He can play across the midfield, posing a threat both in and out of possession. With Luton likely to play over 50 games next season, Campbell could find ample playing time if he can rediscover his previous form.
If Rob Edwards does not see a role for him in his plans, Campbell may be offloaded this summer. However, Barkley’s exit provides him with hope that there could be a place for him in Luton’s midfield, even if it is in a limited capacity.
