Done Deal: Ipswich Town beat Sheffield United, Stoke, Hull City, Blackburn to sign Aston Villa’s Nigerian midfielder …
Ipswich Town has triumphed over Sheffield United, Stoke City, Hull City, and Blackburn Rovers in the race to sign Nigerian midfielder Abube Onuchukwu from Aston Villa. Allnigeriasoccer.com confirms that Ipswich Town, newly promoted to the English Premier League, is about to announce the acquisition of the 2005-born player. Onuchukwu has already signed a two-year contract that will keep him at Ipswich Town until June 30, 2026, with only official confirmation pending.
Onuchukwu will officially join Ipswich Town on July 1, 2024, the day after his contract with Aston Villa concludes. This move marks a significant transfer achievement for Ipswich Town, as they have outmaneuvered several Championship and League One clubs to secure the versatile central midfielder.
In addition to Ipswich Town, Sheffield United and Hull City also extended invitations for trials, but Onuchukwu had already decided to join The Blues. Stoke City, Blackburn Rovers, and League One’s Peterborough United also made attempts to sign him but were unsuccessful.
While Onuchukwu primarily played as a central midfielder at Aston Villa, Ipswich Town plans to deploy him as a left-back and left-sided central defender. Onuchukwu joined Aston Villa at the Under-13 level and progressed through their youth system, signing a scholarship deal with the Lions before the 2022-2023 season.
