Celtic FC could ‘hijack’ Newcastle’s Mamardashvili deal – View
Celtic might be looking to disrupt Newcastle United’s intended transfer of Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili this summer.
That’s the opinion of former England, Tottenham and Leeds keeper Paul Robinson, who was speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast.
The 23-year-old goalkeeper has made a strong impression at the Euros, playing a crucial role in Georgia’s performance in the tournament. Following a season in LaLiga where he kept 13 clean sheets for Valencia, he has started to draw interest from top European clubs, including Newcastle.
Celtic could see long-term benefits from securing Mamardashvili’s signature. While Newcastle has been linked with him, Robinson suggests Celtic could potentially outmaneuver them in the deal.
“He played for Valencia last season and, in my opinion, he was probably La Liga’s goalkeeper of the season,” Robinson told Football Insider. “The way he’s performed in this tournament for Georgia, I believe many teams across Europe are now paying attention.”
“If there’s any chance, if Celtic were willing to make a significant move, this youngster is exceptionally talented,” he added.
“At just 23 years old and standing at six foot six, Mamardashvili dominates his box with impressive saves. Signing him would make a strong statement for Celtic,” Robinson commented.
“While Dubravka is a viable short-term option, the club may face a similar situation next season or the season after. That’s why I can see Celtic potentially intervening in the deal.”
