Luton Town should prioritize securing three key transfers: View
Luton Town faced relegation to the Championship after narrowly missing out on survival in what was always expected to be a tough Premier League campaign.
To compete for a return to the top-flight, Luton Town should focus on strengthening key areas. Already in this transfer window, they’ve seen significant departures from last season’s squad at Kenilworth Road, including Ross Barkley’s pending exit and the returns of loanees Issa Kaboré (from Man City) and Albert Sambi Lokonga (from Arsenal) to their parent clubs.
Rob Edwards will have ambitious plans to rebuild, aiming to replicate the success of their promotion via the play-off final at Wembley two seasons ago. The Championship promises to be fiercely competitive once again, making strategic recruitment crucial as Luton are now viewed as top-six contenders rather than underdogs.
With that in mind, we take a look at THREE signings here that would be particularly shrewd pick-ups.
Di’Shon Bernard
Di’Shon Bernard is likely drawing attention from top Championship clubs vying for promotion, especially as his contract with Sheffield Wednesday expires in June.
The Owls face a pressing decision on whether to retain him. When Bernard joined South Yorkshire last summer, he signed a one-year deal without an option to extend, though discussions about his future began at the end of the 2023/24 season.
His athletic prowess and strong ball-playing abilities make him a potentially good fit for Luton, especially if they continue with their three-at-the-back formation.
Similarly, Bernard has shown his capability on the right side of a back three while representing the Jamaica National Team, where he has amassed 16 appearances at the age of 23.
Tyrhys Dolan
One player who has captured the attention of many Luton Town fans recently is 22-year-old winger Tyrhys Dolan. He has been with Blackburn Rovers since 2020 and has made a significant impact at Ewood Park.
With over 160 appearances and 19 goals for Rovers, Dolan has established himself as a key attacking player for the North West club.
His dynamic and tricky style of play suggests he could be ready for a move to further his career, making him a potentially astute signing for Luton. The club has reportedly been monitoring him closely, indicating a potential mutual benefit if a deal is reached.
Alex Mowatt
Following the departures of Albert Sambi Lokonga, Luke Berry, and the imminent confirmation of Ross Barkley’s move to Aston Villa, Luton Town will need to strengthen their midfield. A viable option could be Alex Mowatt, a proven talent in the top-end of the Championship whose contract with West Bromwich Albion expires in June.
Mowatt, aged 29, has been a key figure in Carlos Corberan’s West Brom side this season, featuring prominently with 43 appearances, contributing five assists and scoring twice. If West Brom delays extending his contract, Luton could potentially provide a new home for Mowatt during what could be the twilight of his prime years, aiming to challenge for promotion to the Premier League next season.
