Rob Edwards makes News admission after Ross Barkley completes Luton transfer

Luton Town manager Rob Edwards explained that Ross Barkley opted to sign with Aston Villa because he believes it offers him the optimal opportunity to regain a spot in the England national team.

The 30-year-old midfielder has returned to Aston Villa on a permanent deal worth £5m, following a previous loan spell at Villa Park from Chelsea in the 2020/21 season. After concluding his time at Chelsea and a subsequent loan to Nice, Barkley joined Luton Town upon their promotion to the Premier League.

During his tenure at Luton, he scored five goals and contributed six assists in 37 appearances. However, with Luton’s relegation to the Championship, Barkley’s departure became inevitable.

“We are saddened to see Ross leave, but we fully understand his decision and he departs with our best wishes and gratitude,” stated Edwards. “It was a pleasure working with him for the season. He made a significant impact, created many memorable moments for us all, and captured the hearts of the supporters. I’m certain everyone appreciates the opportunity he has chosen.”

“Playing in the Premier League and aiming for Champions League football are crucial for Ross. He remains determined to represent England again and sees this move to Villa as his best opportunity,” Edwards explained. “We’ve had a positive conversation, and Ross has expressed his gratitude to me and the club. Our parting is amicable, and as for the future, you never know what might happen.”

“He holds a special fondness for all the supporters and has expressed a desire to return to watch a game. He even mentioned, ‘I want to be back for the Watford derby!’ So, let’s give him a warm welcome when he visits during the season. Ross will always be welcomed back here.”

Luton CEO Gary Sweet expressed his admiration for Ross Barkley, stating, “Having a player of Ross Barkley’s caliber grace the Kenilworth Road pitch has been a delight for all Luton Town supporters. Providing him a home for a season and a supportive environment for his career is mutually beneficial.”

“Ross fully embraced the ethos of Luton Town during his time here. He cherished his experience at the club, and it’s understandable that he prioritizes Champions League football over Championship status. His decision to join Aston Villa is respected by all of us.”

“We sincerely thank Ross for his contributions to the club during his brief stay and wish him every success at Villa Park and beyond.”
