Confirmed: Fee emerges as ‘exemplary’ Coventry City professional completes move to Charlton Athletic

The 32-year-old has successfully completed his medical and agreed to personal terms with League One’s Charlton Athletic earlier this week. Today, he signed a two-year contract with the club, including an option for a third year. Coventry City initially acquired him from Peterborough United for approximately £750,000 in 2019.

In an official statement, Coventry City expressed gratitude, saying, “The Sky Blues would like to place on record our thanks and appreciation to Matty for his service to the club since joining in 2019 from Peterborough United. Matty has been an exemplary professional both on and off the pitch, and everyone at Coventry City wishes him the best of luck for the future.”

Godden played 156 games for Coventry City, scoring 50 goals, which places him 21st on the club’s list of all-time top scorers. After joining in August 2019, Godden scored 14 goals in 26 games, helping the Sky Blues win the 2019/20 League One title.

He also scored Coventry’s first goal upon their return to the Championship and continued to be a key player in the second tier of English football. His efforts contributed to the team reaching the Championship play-off final in the 2022/23 season and the FA Cup semi-final in the 2023/24 season.

Manager Mark Robins remarked, “Matty has made a significant contribution to our rise up the leagues, including being integral to our League One title win and then establishing ourselves in the Championship. He will be fondly remembered by Sky Blues supporters for many years to come for what he has achieved here, and we wish him the best of luck for the future.”

Sky Blues owner Doug King also paid tribute, stating, “Matty has been a fantastic servant to Coventry City and an important part of the club’s journey. He is an exemplary professional.”
