Sunderland Face West Brom Competition in race for a 4-Time Promotion Winner
Sunderland are seeking to strengthen their first-team squad following the appointment of Regis Le Bris. They have set their sights on a former Premier League midfielder to enhance their midfield options.
Before Le Bris was named as Michael Beale’s permanent successor, Sunderland had only made one signing. The Black Cats secured former Sheffield United goalkeeper Simon Moore, who joined after a three-year stint with Championship side Coventry City.
Moore’s arrival has been Sunderland’s sole signing of the summer so far, but there are strong rumors of additional acquisitions. The latest player linked to a move to Sunderland is Oliver Norwood, who recently left Sheffield United after his contract expired.
Journalist Michael Graham reports that Sunderland has a “very serious interest” in the 33-year-old Norwood following his release from Sheffield United. However, Championship rivals West Bromwich Albion and Watford are also keen on signing the experienced midfielder.
Norwood has had a remarkable career in the Championship, earning promotion to the Premier League four times with three different clubs. From 2017 to 2019, he was part of promotion-winning teams at Brighton, Fulham, and Sheffield United, playing in the Premier League with the latter for the first time in his career. Sunderland, West Brom, and Watford are all hoping Norwood can bring his promotion magic as they vie for a return to the top flight next season.
