After an encouraging return to the Championship, Birmingham City are already planning for a stronger campaign next season, with reports suggesting the club are exploring a potential loan move for highly-rated Tommy Watson from Brighton & Hove Albion.
Although questions were raised about head coach Chris Davies during parts of the season, Birmingham finished the campaign positively. A five-game unbeaten streak helped the club secure 10th place in the Championship standings, offering supporters optimism heading into the summer.
The Blues had entered the season with major ambitions after earning promotion from League One in remarkable fashion the previous year. Their title-winning campaign produced an extraordinary 111-point tally, and the club hoped to build on that momentum by challenging immediately for a return to the Premier League — a division they have not played in since 2011.
Despite heavy investment in the squad, Birmingham struggled to maintain a serious push for the play-off places. Ultimately, they ended the season nine points behind sixth-placed Hull City, forcing the club to reassess ahead of another important transfer window.
One player now linked with a move to St. Andrew’s is young winger Tommy Watson. According to reports, Birmingham are among several Championship clubs interested in taking the 20-year-old on loan from Brighton next season.
Watson joined Brighton from Sunderland A.F.C. last summer in a deal reportedly worth around £10 million after helping Sunderland secure promotion to the Premier League. However, opportunities in the top flight proved limited, with the youngster making only six substitute appearances before being sent out on loan to Millwall F.C. during the second half of the campaign.
During his spell at Millwall under manager Alex Neil, Watson featured 12 times in the Championship and showed flashes of his attacking quality, including making two starts as the club reached the play-off semi-finals before eventually being eliminated by Hull City.
Birmingham are now hoping to convince the winger that St. Andrew’s would be the ideal destination for his continued development. However, competition for his signature is expected to be strong, with interest also reportedly coming from several second-tier clubs and even Portuguese giants FC Porto.
Brighton are believed to still view Watson as part of their long-term plans under head coach Fabian Hürzeler, but another temporary move is seen as the best option to ensure he receives consistent first-team football and continues his progression.
From Watson’s perspective, another season in the Championship could be the perfect next step. While his talent suggests he is capable of eventually becoming a Premier League-level player, regular minutes at a competitive level are still essential for his growth.
A move to Birmingham could offer him the opportunity to play in an ambitious side aiming for promotion, but there may also be concerns over competition for places within Davies’ squad. With several attacking options already available at the club, Watson will likely prioritise joining a team where he can become a regular starter rather than simply a squad player.
As Birmingham prepare for another push toward the Championship play-offs next season, strengthening their attacking options appears to be a major priority — and Watson could emerge as one of the club’s most intriguing targets of the summer transfer window.
