Plymouth Argyle Told to Stand Firm Over Lorent Tolaj as Preston North End Join Transfer Race
Plymouth Argyle could face a major challenge in keeping hold of star striker Lorent Tolaj this summer, with growing interest from a number of clubs threatening to end his stay at Home Park after just one season.
The Pilgrims endured an inconsistent League One campaign last term. A disappointing first half of the season left them battling near the relegation zone at the start of January, but an impressive improvement after the turn of the year saw them climb the table. Despite their resurgence, they narrowly missed out on a play-off place, finishing eighth.
One of the biggest reasons behind that revival was Tolaj. Signed from Port Vale for around £1.2 million last summer, the 24-year-old enjoyed a sensational debut campaign in green, registering 21 goals and eight assists across 35 appearances in all competitions. His performances quickly established him as one of the division’s standout attacking players.
Unsurprisingly, such form has attracted widespread attention from clubs both in England and abroad. Celtic were among the first teams linked with the Swiss-born forward earlier this year, alongside teammate Aribim Pepple, but the race has expanded significantly in recent weeks.
Several Championship clubs, including Norwich City, Stoke City, Swansea City, Derby County and Millwall, have all reportedly expressed interest in Tolaj. Overseas, Belgian giants Anderlecht, Danish champions Copenhagen and Scottish heavyweights Rangers have also been credited with monitoring his situation ahead of the new season.
Preston North End are now the latest club to enter the race. Reports suggest the Lancashire side have identified Tolaj as one of their preferred options should Milutin Osmajic leave Deepdale, with the Montenegro international entering the final year of his current contract. Preston are believed to be actively assessing replacements, and Tolaj’s goalscoring exploits have placed him high on their shortlist.
Plymouth urged to demand at least £4 million for Tolaj
Despite the increasing speculation surrounding the striker’s future, many connected with Plymouth believe the club should only consider offers that properly reflect his value.
Speaking about the situation, Football League World’s Plymouth Argyle fan pundit Luke Hodge insisted the Pilgrims must refuse to entertain any bids below £4 million. He also argued that any agreement should include a substantial sell-on clause to ensure the club benefits from any future transfer.
According to Hodge, interest from clubs such as Preston and Celtic highlights just how highly Tolaj is now regarded, and he believes Argyle are in a strong negotiating position.
He argued that while Plymouth must remain realistic as a League One club, Tolaj possesses the quality to eventually command a fee between £5 million and £8 million if he continues developing. For that reason, he feels accepting anything below £4 million would undervalue one of the club’s biggest assets.
Hodge also expressed confidence that the forward has the ability to thrive at a much higher level in the future, suggesting his reputation and market value are only likely to increase over the coming years.
Because of that potential, he believes a significant sell-on percentage should be viewed as essential in any transfer negotiations. Such a clause, he argued, would help protect Plymouth’s long-term interests and ensure the club shares in any future financial rewards if Tolaj goes on to establish himself at a higher level.
With multiple clubs now monitoring the striker and Preston adding further competition to an already crowded race, Plymouth may soon face one of the biggest transfer decisions of their summer. Whether they manage to keep hold of Tolaj or eventually sanction his departure, the club will be determined to secure a deal that fully reflects the importance of one of League One’s most prolific forwards.
