Phillies Bring Back Experienced Left-Hander Kolby Allard on Minor League Deal
The Philadelphia Phillies have strengthened their organizational pitching depth by signing veteran left-handed pitcher Kolby Allard to a minor league contract. The move comes shortly after the 28-year-old elected to opt out of his previous minor league agreement with the Cleveland Guardians, allowing him to re-enter free agency before ultimately returning to an organization he is already familiar with.
Allard’s latest deal will see him report to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, where he will serve as an experienced depth option for the Phillies. His return to Philadelphia marks a reunion, as he also spent time with the organization during the 2024 season. The Phillies are continuing to evaluate their pitching options throughout the season, and adding a pitcher with both starting and relief experience provides additional flexibility within the system.
During his stint with Triple-A Columbus in the Guardians’ organization this season, Allard appeared in eight games, five of which were starts. Across 30 2/3 innings, he posted a respectable 4.11 ERA while demonstrating solid command and consistency. He recorded a 1.14 WHIP, struck out 28 batters, and issued only nine walks. His strikeout rate of 22.4% reflected an ability to miss bats at a decent level, while his 7.2% walk rate highlighted his control. Additionally, he generated ground balls on 45.3% of balls put into play, an encouraging statistic for a pitcher looking to limit hard contact and damage.
Although his Triple-A numbers were relatively solid, Allard’s brief opportunity at the major league level with Cleveland was far less successful. He appeared in four games out of the bullpen and struggled significantly, finishing with a 10.38 ERA over 8 2/3 innings. Following those appearances, the Guardians designated him for assignment on April 13 before sending him back to Columbus three days later. He subsequently signed another minor league contract with the club but was released on May 17. Despite the release, he remained active with Triple-A Columbus and continued pitching there until his final appearance on June 14.
One of Allard’s most valuable traits during his time in the Guardians’ system was his versatility. He effectively transitioned between starting and relief duties whenever needed, giving the organization flexibility in managing its pitching staff. Across his eight Triple-A appearances, he compiled a 2-0 record, further demonstrating his ability to contribute in multiple roles.
Looking back at last season, Allard enjoyed a far more productive campaign at the major league level. In 2024, he delivered a 2.63 ERA across 65 innings, striking out 42 batters while issuing only 14 walks. Those surface-level numbers painted the picture of a reliable contributor. However, advanced metrics suggested his performance may have benefited from some favorable circumstances, as his 3.54 FIP (Fielding Independent Pitching) and 4.41 SIERA (Skill-Interactive ERA) projected a less dominant profile than his ERA alone indicated.
Over the course of his professional career, Allard has accumulated experience across parts of nine Major League seasons, posting a 5.47 career ERA. While he has yet to establish himself as a long-term fixture in a big-league rotation, his experience and ability to fill multiple pitching roles continue to make him an attractive depth option for organizations seeking reliable reinforcements.
For Philadelphia, the signing arrives at a time when the club continues to monitor the stability of its pitching staff. Questions surrounding the back end of the rotation, ongoing roster adjustments, and the management of young arms have created a need for additional experienced options throughout the organization. By bringing Allard back into the fold, the Phillies gain a familiar pitcher who can provide immediate depth at Triple-A while remaining available should the major league club require reinforcements later in the season.
Although he is not currently on the Phillies’ 40-man roster, Allard’s track record, versatility, and familiarity with the organization could position him as a candidate for a future call-up if injuries or performance issues create an opening at the major league level. For now, the veteran left-hander will focus on proving himself at Lehigh Valley and working his way back into the conversation for another opportunity in Philadelphia.
