Sad news – Stoke City star reveals graphic surgery recovery following devastating leg fracture.

Former Stoke City midfielder Stephen Ireland has shared graphic images of the scars left after undergoing surgery for a horrific double leg fracture suffered during a Sunday league match.

The former Republic of Ireland international recently made headlines after breaking both his tibia and fibula while playing for Wythenshawe Veterans in a cup final. Following the operation, Ireland provided fans with an update on his recovery journey through a series of posts on Instagram.

In one of the updates shared on Saturday, Ireland was seen arriving at a medical facility using crutches, accompanied by the caption: “Nice early morning wake up to get clips/sutures out.” Another post showed a black-and-white image of his injured leg after the cast had been removed, revealing visible stitches and extensive surgical scarring from the procedure.

The devastating injury took place earlier this month during the Cheshire Veterans Premier Division Cup final between Wythenshawe Over-35s and South Liverpool. Wythenshawe’s veterans side had already gained widespread attention this season due to the presence of several former Premier League stars dominating local competition. During the final itself, former Newcastle United striker Papiss Cisse had scored a hat-trick before the match was eventually abandoned following Ireland’s serious injury.

This latest update comes after Ireland previously broke his silence on social media by posting footage of the incident itself. The video captured the moment of the challenge that resulted in the break, with opposition players visibly shocked and holding their heads in disbelief at the severity of the injury.

The emotional post also included photographs of Ireland lying on the pitch while receiving emergency treatment from paramedics, followed by images of him recovering in a hospital bed and later leaving the hospital on crutches after surgery.

Immediately after the incident, there had been uncertainty surrounding the seriousness of the injury, which occurred at Warrington Rylands’ Gorsey Lane ground. However, Ireland’s wife, Jessica, later confirmed the full extent of the damage in an emotional Instagram statement.

Alongside a touching photo of herself holding Stephen’s hand in hospital while he wore his Wythenshawe shirt, Jessica explained that she felt compelled to update the many people who had been reaching out with concern and support. She apologised for not responding to messages sooner, explaining that her full focus had been on helping Stephen through the ordeal.

Jessica revealed that Stephen had suffered what doctors described as a “both-bone” fracture, meaning both the tibia and fibula in his leg had been severely broken, making surgery necessary. Thankfully, she confirmed that the operation had been successful and that he had now begun the long process of recovery.

She also expressed deep gratitude to everyone who had shown support, sent kind messages, or assisted immediately after the incident. Acknowledging how traumatic the experience had been for those who witnessed it, she thanked everyone involved for their quick actions and compassion on the day.

Despite the difficult rehabilitation ahead, Jessica said those who know Stephen best are confident he will work tirelessly to regain full fitness as quickly as possible.
