Rangers manager Danny Rohl appears increasingly likely to remain at Ibrox after reports emerged that VfL Wolfsburg have shifted their attention toward alternative managerial candidates in their search for a new permanent head coach.
The Bundesliga side had reportedly identified Rohl as one of several potential successors to Dieter Hecking, who is set to transition into the role of sporting director following Wolfsburg’s historic relegation from Germany’s top flight last week. Rohl, who has attracted attention for his managerial work and was believed to be on the club’s shortlist, had been viewed as a possible option for the rebuilding project ahead of next season.
However, recent developments in Germany suggest that the 37-year-old has slipped down Wolfsburg’s list of preferred candidates. Instead, SC Verl manager Tobias Strobl has now reportedly emerged as the leading contender for the role. Strobl has earned widespread praise after guiding Verl to one of the most successful campaigns in the club’s history, recording a club-best tally of 64 points in Germany’s third tier.
The highly rated coach is also attracting interest from Arminia Bielefeld, who are searching for a new manager following the departure of Mitch Kniat. Despite the growing interest in Strobl, SC Verl are believed to be in a strong negotiating position, as the manager still has a year remaining on his current contract and no release clause is included in his deal. Any club wishing to appoint him would therefore likely need to pay significant compensation before formal talks could take place.
For many Rangers supporters, the apparent cooling of Wolfsburg’s interest in Rohl will come as welcome news. While sections of the fanbase remain divided over the impact the former Sheffield Wednesday boss has made since arriving in Glasgow, others see him as a key figure in the club’s long-term ambitions to return to domestic dominance.
Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh recently addressed speculation surrounding Rohl’s future and made it clear the club are determined to keep him in charge. Speaking last month, Cavenagh stressed that losing the manager would represent a major setback for the club’s plans moving forward.
He stated that Rangers believe Rohl offers them the strongest possible chance of challenging for and winning the league title next season. Cavenagh also insisted that the manager remains fully committed to the project at Ibrox and that the board expect him to continue leading the team into the upcoming campaign.
Rohl himself has also publicly dismissed rumours linking him with other jobs and reaffirmed his commitment to Rangers. The German coach explained that despite repeated speculation connecting him with various vacancies across Europe, his focus remains entirely on building success in Glasgow.
According to Rohl, ongoing discussions with the Rangers board have centred solely on how the club can compete for trophies and establish sustained success in the future. He emphasized that improving standards throughout the club is essential if Rangers are to return to winning major honours consistently.
The manager acknowledged that Rangers have fallen short of expectations over the past 15 years and argued that significant structural and cultural improvements are needed across the club. He believes progress has already been made in raising standards during the last six months, but insists much more work is required both on and off the pitch.
Rohl concluded by stressing that genuine success will only come if Rangers continue to evolve, modernise, and create a stronger winning culture throughout the entire organisation.
