Exclusive: Sheffield United Preparing for Another Significant Shake-Up as “Integral” Figure Nears Bramall Lane Exit

Sheffield United are reportedly preparing for another major restructuring behind the scenes this summer, with a long-serving and highly influential member of the club’s coaching staff expected to leave Bramall Lane. According to reports, the departure will mark the end of one of football’s longest and most respected coaching partnerships.

Following a deeply disappointing Championship campaign that saw the Blades finish in 13th place, the club is now focused on rebuilding and planning for the future. While another managerial change is not currently being considered — especially after last year’s decision to replace Chris Wilder with Ruben Selles proved unsuccessful — significant changes are still expected within the club’s backroom team.

It is understood that Alan Knill, Chris Wilder’s long-time assistant and one of the most respected coaches within the English game, is set to leave Sheffield United this summer. The news reportedly came as a surprise to the 61-year-old when he was informed earlier this week.

Knill only returned to Bramall Lane in September alongside Wilder and coach Matt Prestridge, as the club attempted to steady itself and prepare for a new era following last season’s setbacks. However, despite preparations for the upcoming campaign already being underway, Wilder will reportedly return to the dugout without his trusted right-hand man beside him.

The end of Knill’s tenure will also bring an emotional close to a partnership that has stretched across several clubs and many years. Wilder and Knill have worked together at Bury, Middlesbrough, Watford, and Sheffield United, building a strong professional relationship that has become widely admired throughout football.

Sources indicate that the decision was made by the COH Sports ownership group with a long-term vision in mind. The move is expected to create opportunities for younger coaches within the setup, including Micky Collins and Guilherme Ramos — the Portuguese coach who joined Wilder’s staff last September — to take on greater responsibility moving forward.

Chris Wilder recently paid a heartfelt tribute to Knill while accepting a lifetime achievement award at The Star’s Football Awards shortly before the season ended. Speaking emotionally about his long-time colleague and friend, Wilder described Knill as “integral” to everything they had achieved together.

Wilder explained that he had known Knill since he was a 16-year-old apprentice at Southampton and praised him as a genuine football man who rarely receives the recognition he truly deserves. He described Knill not simply as an assistant manager, but as an equal partner throughout their journey in football.

According to Wilder, Knill possesses an exceptional footballing mind and an outstanding skill set, while also being a loyal ally and close friend — qualities he believes are invaluable in the demanding and often unforgiving world of football management.

Knill’s expected departure therefore represents far more than a routine staffing change. It signals the end of a long-standing football partnership that has played a major role in some of the most important chapters of Chris Wilder’s managerial career.
