Newcastle United are keeping a close eye on another Sporting striker after Viktor Gyökeres’ successful move to Arsenal highlighted the club’s ability to develop top forwards.
This time, the player drawing attention is Luis Suárez, who has quietly enjoyed one of the standout scoring seasons in Europe. Despite the familiar name, he is Colombian, not Uruguayan, and he has scored 35 goals in 50 official appearances for Sporting this season.
Suárez has also contributed a number of assists and has become the main attacking outlet for Rui Borges’ side since arriving from Almería last summer as Gyökeres’ replacement.
Before joining Sporting, he had already shown his goalscoring quality in Spain, finishing as the top scorer in the second division during the 2024-25 season. That form has now placed him firmly on the radar of Premier League clubs.
Interest growing again
Earlier this year, reports from Portugal linked both Newcastle United and Liverpool with interest in the 28-year-old. Attention slowed for a while as Sporting progressed through the Champions League knockout rounds and stayed in contention with Porto in the league.
With both of those runs now over, speculation has picked up again.
According to Record, Newcastle have made enquiries about Suárez and have compiled scouting reports on him throughout the season, especially after his performances in the Champions League.
The Portuguese outlet also says there is still no official bid, while Sporting remain relaxed because of the striker’s €80 million release clause, which they are not expected to lower.
Newcastle keeping him under review
Suárez has reportedly become a regular talking point within Newcastle’s recruitment department in recent months. The club is searching for attacking reinforcements and sees parallels between the Colombian’s rise and Gyökeres’ path at Sporting.
Even so, Newcastle’s sporting position could play a big part in any future deal. Eddie Howe’s side are currently sitting around mid-table and may miss out on European football next season.
That could matter to Suárez, who is said to want to keep competing for trophies and playing in European competitions after finally returning to that stage this season.
For now, his attention remains on Sporting’s final league matches and Colombia’s upcoming World Cup campaign, where he could come up against Portugal in the group stage.
