“Profiting – Huddersfield Town’s signing from Bradford City turned out to be a brilliant piece of business.

Nahki Wells’ move from Bradford City to Huddersfield Town is widely regarded as an outstanding piece of transfer business, with both clubs playing key roles in shaping a striker who went on to enjoy a career spanning from League Two all the way to the Premier League.

Wells began his football journey in Bermuda, representing Dandy Town Hornets and later Bermuda Hogges before relocating to England. He had a short spell in non-league football with Eccleshill United, which helped him adapt to the English game. His first real entry into the English Football League came at Carlisle United in 2011, although his opportunities there were extremely limited, as he only managed three appearances.

His breakthrough came after joining Bradford City ahead of the 2011/12 season. At Bradford, Wells quickly developed into a key attacking threat. In his debut season, he scored 10 goals in 33 League Two matches, along with two more in the FA Cup, even though the club itself finished in the lower half of the table. This early promise signaled his potential as a rising forward in the EFL.

The following season, 2012/13, marked a major leap in his development. Wells delivered a prolific return of 22 goals in 42 league games, playing a central role in Bradford’s promotion to League One via the play-offs, where they defeated Northampton Town 3–0 in the final. That same season, Bradford achieved one of the most remarkable cup runs in modern English football, reaching the League Cup final as a fourth-tier side. Along the way, they produced shock victories over top-flight teams including Wigan Athletic, Arsenal (on penalties), and Aston Villa, with Wells contributing important goals during the run.

In League One during the first half of the 2013/14 season, Wells continued his strong form, scoring 14 goals in just 19 appearances. Across his time at Bradford City overall, he registered 53 goals and 11 assists in 112 appearances, establishing himself as one of the most effective forwards outside the top divisions.

His performances attracted attention from higher up the pyramid, and in January 2014, Huddersfield Town—then competing in the Championship—signed him. The transfer proved to be an excellent acquisition. Wells adapted quickly to the higher level, scoring seven goals in 22 appearances in his first half-season, helping Huddersfield stabilise in the second tier.

Over the next seasons, he continued to be a reliable attacking option, scoring 11 goals in 2014/15 and improving further with 17 goals in 2015/16 as Huddersfield remained competitive in the Championship. In the historic 2016/17 campaign, he contributed 10 goals and assists combined as Huddersfield achieved promotion to the Premier League for the first time in the club’s modern history, winning the play-off final against Reading on penalties.

In total, Wells recorded 49 goals and 13 assists in 153 appearances for Huddersfield Town, leaving a lasting impact on their rise through the Championship and eventual promotion to the top flight.

Looking back, Huddersfield’s decision to sign him from Bradford proved to be a masterstroke, as he played a significant role in one of the club’s most successful eras—while Bradford can also be credited for identifying and developing a player who would go on to perform at the highest level of English football.
