Bradford City Play-Off Match Sees Heavy Police Presence and 9 Arrests

Nine people were arrested as police carried out a major operation during Bradford City’s play-off clash with Bolton Wanderers at Valley Parade on Thursday night.

More than 20,000 fans packed into the stadium for the second leg of the EFL play-off semi-final, with Bradford hoping to overturn a 1-0 aggregate deficit and keep alive their dream of reaching Wembley and earning promotion to the Championship.

The atmosphere around the city was intense long before kick-off, as large groups of supporters made their way toward Valley Parade chanting, waving flares, and filling the streets with claret and amber smoke.

Despite the electric support, Bradford’s season came to a heartbreaking end after Bolton scored in the 81st minute to secure a 1-0 victory on the night, leaving the Bantams needing two late goals just to force extra time.

Ahead of the match, West Yorkshire Police had prepared a large-scale operation in coordination with Greater Manchester Police following disorder during the first leg in Bolton.

A significant police presence could be seen throughout the evening, particularly around North Parade and Manningham Lane near the Bradford Arms pub — an area viewed as a potential flashpoint because away supporters often gather there.

Police confirmed afterward that nine arrests were made for various public order offences. Two men were charged over incidents inside the stadium, including pitch encroachment and entering the ground while intoxicated. Officers also issued two community resolutions and one caution.

One Bradford supporter praised the police response, saying officers appeared much more prepared compared to previous high-profile matches earlier in the season.

“The police seemed to have a better strategy this time,” the fan said. “They lined up several police vans across the front of the Bradford Arms to keep rival fans separated. There was some chanting and a few cans thrown, but nothing too serious from what I saw.”

West Yorkshire Police later released a statement confirming that the match passed “without any serious incidents” despite the heightened tensions surrounding the play-off encounter.
