Plymouth Argyle Eye Experienced Forward Victor Adeboyejo as Summer Recruitment Plans Gather Pace
Plymouth Argyle have identified former Mansfield Town striker Victor Adeboyejo as a potential summer signing as the club prepares to strengthen its squad ahead of the 2026/27 League One campaign. According to transfer insider Pete O’Rourke, the Pilgrims are weighing up an early move for the 28-year-old, although Scottish Premiership side Dundee United are also believed to be monitoring his situation.
Following an extraordinary turnaround under manager Tom Cleverley during the second half of last season, Plymouth Argyle enter the new campaign with renewed optimism and genuine ambitions of challenging for promotion. Cleverley inherited a side rooted to the bottom of the League One table but masterminded an impressive revival that saw Argyle finish just two points shy of the play-off positions, transforming the club into one of the division’s most dangerous teams.
A major factor behind that resurgence was the team’s attacking prowess. Plymouth emerged as one of the league’s most prolific goalscoring sides, netting 75 goals throughout the campaign—more than every team outside the top two. Leading the charge was Swiss striker Lorent Tolaj, whose remarkable return of 18 goals in just 33 appearances established him as one of the standout forwards in League One.
However, uncertainty now surrounds Tolaj’s future. The striker has attracted significant interest from Championship clubs following his excellent debut season at Home Park, prompting Plymouth’s recruitment team to begin exploring alternative options in the event they are unable to retain their star forward.
One of the first names to emerge on Argyle’s shortlist is Victor Adeboyejo. The powerful centre-forward recently became a free agent after leaving Mansfield Town and possesses considerable experience across the English Football League. His availability presents an attractive opportunity for clubs seeking a physically imposing striker capable of leading the line, and Plymouth are believed to be among those keen to secure his signature.
Throughout last season, Cleverley demonstrated the importance of having multiple attacking options available. Adeboyejo’s playing style appears well suited to the tactical system Cleverley has established. Like Tolaj, he is a strong, physical striker who excels at holding up the ball, winning aerial duels and bringing teammates into attacking moves. His presence would provide Plymouth with a different dimension in attack while maintaining the aggressive, direct approach that proved so successful during their revival.
The 28-year-old arguably enjoyed the best season of his career during the 2022/23 campaign with Burton Albion. Operating as the focal point of an attack supported by creative players such as Joe Powell, Davis Keillor-Dunn and Jonny Smith, Adeboyejo scored 14 goals and contributed three assists. Those performances earned him a move to Bolton Wanderers and cemented his reputation as one of League One’s more effective target men.
A similar setup could await him at Plymouth. With energetic runners and creative attacking midfielders capable of playing around his hold-up play, Adeboyejo could thrive within Cleverley’s system and become an important figure in the club’s pursuit of promotion.
Across his professional career to date, Adeboyejo has made 239 appearances, scoring 38 goals and registering nine assists. While those statistics may not be extraordinary, they reflect the consistency and experience he has built across several clubs in the Football League.
Meanwhile, the future of Lorent Tolaj remains one of the biggest talking points surrounding Plymouth Argyle this summer. After joining the club in August 2025 following the activation of his release clause, the former Aldershot Town striker quickly established himself as one of League One’s most clinical finishers. Averaging better than a goal every two matches, Tolaj became central to Argyle’s impressive resurgence and one of the division’s most feared attacking threats.
His performances have naturally attracted interest from clubs higher up the football pyramid, with Championship side Preston North End among those reportedly monitoring his situation. Keeping Tolaj at Home Park is expected to be one of Tom Cleverley’s biggest priorities during the transfer window.
Nevertheless, bringing in a proven League One striker such as Adeboyejo would give Plymouth greater depth and quality in attack. Whether viewed as direct competition for Tolaj or as a potential replacement should the Swiss forward depart, the signing would ensure Cleverley has another experienced option capable of delivering goals and leading the frontline.
