He will be missed – Bradford city boss backs key player for crucial exit – I wish him well.

Bradford City manager Graham Alexander has expressed confidence that midfielder Jenson Metcalfe has the qualities needed to succeed in the Championship following his transfer to Millwall.

Metcalfe completed a move to Millwall after an impressive season with Bradford City, where he made 49 appearances and established himself as one of the club’s standout performers. The transfer, believed to be worth a seven-figure fee, marks another significant step in the young midfielder’s career after joining the Bantams from Everton.

Alexander believes Metcalfe has consistently demonstrated the ability to adapt and improve whenever he has faced a higher standard of football. Reflecting on the player’s development, the Bradford boss pointed out that Metcalfe experienced a similar progression during his loan spell at Chesterfield in League Two. Although he struggled for regular minutes initially, he eventually cemented his place in the starting line-up and became a key player. The same pattern continued after his move to League One with Bradford City, where he gradually established himself as an influential member of the squad.

According to Alexander, Metcalfe possesses the mentality and determination required to thrive at a higher level. He expects the midfielder to quickly understand the demands of Championship football, adapt his game accordingly, and continue raising his performances despite facing stronger competition.

The Bradford City manager also highlighted the importance of developing talented players who can progress to bigger opportunities. While the club’s priority is achieving success on the pitch by building competitive teams, he acknowledged that football is also a business. Producing players who increase in value and secure lucrative transfers is essential for the club’s long-term financial stability and sustainability.

Metcalfe only joined Bradford City towards the end of last pre-season, but his impressive performances—particularly during the second half of the campaign—attracted interest from several clubs. Alexander revealed that while there had been ongoing speculation surrounding a number of Bradford players over the past year, Millwall were the first club to submit a serious offer for Metcalfe.

The timing of the bid was far from ideal for Bradford, arriving just days after experienced midfielder Max Power had already departed the club. With both Power and Metcalfe having accumulated around 100 appearances between them during the season, Alexander admitted that losing two influential midfielders in quick succession was never part of his plans.

Nevertheless, the manager accepted that opportunities to play at a higher level are difficult for ambitious young footballers to ignore. Drawing on his own experiences as a former player, Alexander said it would not have been right to prevent Metcalfe from pursuing his Championship dream, provided the transfer also benefited Bradford City. In this case, he explained, the financial package represented an excellent return on the club’s investment after just one season.

Alexander also spoke warmly about his final conversations with Metcalfe before the transfer was completed. He praised the midfielder’s professionalism, dedication, and work ethic, noting that it is always rewarding for a manager to see players who fully commit themselves to their careers earn opportunities to progress.

Concluding his remarks, Alexander expressed complete confidence that Metcalfe will embrace the challenge at Millwall. He believes the midfielder has earned the opportunity through hard work and talent and expects him to make the most of his chance to establish himself in the Championship.
